Robert Kramar of Master Designs was approached the beginning of February 2010 by a fashion designer, Rania Salibi, one of nine fashion designers hand selected to design a gown for the 2010 Oscars Designer Challenge. The winning gown will be worn during the Oscars by the on-stage awards escort. Rania is from Lebanon, and is currently living in Phoenix, Arizona. Her design for the gown was to create a dress from several sheets of laser cut leather, breaking the mold of what one would think black leather would look like, and the fact that leather just isn't used for a dress, let alone an Oscar gown. Rania selected Master Designs and asked Robert to become a textile designer overnight and create a custom lace pattern that would then be laser cut from sheets of 0.020" black leather to make them resemble delicate lace... anything but leather. After almost 30 hours of hand-drawing over 16,000 custom shapes and connected scallops in AutoCAD, Robert had finished the pattern and started laser cutting the leather, at a cutting time of over 5 hours per sheet. The geometry was so intense that Robert had to separate each sheet into three individual programs so the laser could handle the massive geometry intense CAD files. Master Designs ended up supplying Rania with 6 full sheets and several additional feet of scalloped trim so she could start her magic. Here are some photos of the gown on the runway as well as a close up of one of the sheets of leather (actual sheet size shown in the photo is an overall dimension of 18" x 30").
Voting for the 2010 Oscars Designer Challenge started at Oscar.com and the voting public was given 10 days to select a winner. On March 7th, 2010, Robert received the call from a very excited Rania shouting through the phone that the dress had won and Rania was getting ready to walk the carpet with the model Jenna Hurt. It was a great pleasure, after all the hard work, to view the dress during the entire 3 hour 2010 Oscar's award show.

Master Designs is now offering in-house 3D Digital Optical Scanning using our new Optimet ConoProbe Scanner. The ConoProbe is a non-contact, single-point measuring sensor based on conoscopic holography technology. Our envelope size is 48" x 96" x 3". If your part fits within those parameters, we can optically digitize your 3D part. Great for reverse engineering an existing part to be CNC routered or lasercut. Not only does our digitizing service allow for scanning of larger parts, but it achieves significant improvements in measurement ability, speed, precision and overall efficiency over contact probing scanners. You determine the scan accuracy required and we will do the rest. We will provide you with your scan via email or CD/DVD. 24 hour turnaround time is available. Contact us for a quote.
Start advertising your event or business with our new eco-friendly solvent ink full color printed, gloss laminated and die-cut to the shape of your logo or lettering.
